Town of 1770, also written Seventeen Seventy, is a small seaside town about 15 minutes' drive north of Agnes Water. Its marina is where the Lady Musgrave boats leave from, and the crossing is the shortest one to the island.

The town is a long drive from anywhere: five and a half hours from Brisbane, an hour and a half from Bundaberg or Gladstone.

The quick answer

The boat ride from 1770 to Lady Musgrave takes about 90 minutes each way on a power catamaran, and the day cruise on this site lasts about 9 hours. 1770 Reef says its departure times change daily with the tide (check-in from about 6am to 11am); one guest on the day cruise checked in at 5:15am, so check the time for your date. From Brisbane, allow about 5 hours 30 minutes of driving to 1770 before that.

How long is the boat ride from 1770 to Lady Musgrave?

About 90 minutes each way. The island is 59 km east-north-east of Seventeen Seventy, against 96 km from Bundaberg.

1770 Reef runs the crossing in an air-conditioned vessel, and the day cruise on this site lists a power catamaran, about 90 minutes each way. Lady Musgrave Experience's boat from Bundaberg takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. That is 45 minutes less sea each way from 1770, which matters if you get seasick.

Why does the 1770 boat leave at a different time every day?

Because the tide decides it. 1770 Reef says its departure times change daily with the tidal conditions, so check-in can be as early as 6am or as late as 11am.

Plan the evening before around the time on your booking, not around a typical day. One July guest checked in at 5:15am, boarded at 6am and found it cold standing around on the marina. Bring a warm layer for the morning.

The meeting point for the Lady Musgrave day cruise is 535 Captain Cook Drive, Seventeen Seventy. One example day, written up by Gladstone Region's tourism site, left at 9am, was in the lagoon by 10:30am and got back around 5pm.

Allow a full day just to reach 1770: about 5 hours 30 minutes by road. The boat day itself is another 8.5 to 9 hours.

Brisbane to the reef and back in one day does not work. The realistic plan is to drive or fly up, sleep in 1770 or Agnes Water, and take the boat the next morning.

Arrive the evening before: an early check-in and a long drive do not mix.

Where should you stay for an early Lady Musgrave boat?

In Town of 1770 or Agnes Water. The two centres are 5.9 km apart, so either works, but the closer you are to the marina, the easier an early check-in is.

The day cruise does not include hotel pickup, so you get yourself to Captain Cook Drive. Check the check-in time before you book your room, not after. If you are driving up from Brisbane the same day, only plan the boat for the next morning if the tide gives a late start.

Want to wake up on the island instead? Queensland Parks allows up to 40 campers on Lady Musgrave in season, and 1770 Reef runs camper transfers. Permits and dates are in the camping guide.

No pickup, so stay close: the 1770 day cruise meets at 535 Captain Cook Drive.

Is the boat ride to Lady Musgrave rough?

It can be. 1770 Reef calls it an open-ocean crossing, and the day cruise listing says seasickness medication is highly recommended.

Take a tablet before you board, not when you start feeling sick. Buy them from a chemist before you travel. Lady Musgrave Experience's advice works for either port: one tablet the night before, another in the morning, plenty of water and no alcohol.

Guests say the crews are good when it does get choppy. "The crew were amazing when my husband got sea sick on the way there as it was a bit choppy [...] those girls couldn’t do enough for everyone" (Shirley, Feb 2026).

What else is there to do in Town of 1770?

Ride a LARC: the amphibious vehicles run a day trip to the Bustard Head lighthouse, a two-hour picnic tour and a one-hour afternoon tour of the creek and sand bar.

All three leave from the same address on Captain Cook Drive as the reef boats. They make a good second day, and the shorter ones fit around an afternoon return from the reef.
