Booking choice: The Lady Musgrave Island day cruise, from $225 per person. Check dates Tour details
Lady Musgrave is open to day visitors all year, and the operators say the green turtles in the lagoon do not leave. What changes with the seasons is everything around them: nesting on the beach, hatchlings, seabirds in the pisonia, humpbacks offshore, mantas, the stinger season and the water temperature.
The camping calendar matters too. Tents are allowed from Easter to late January, then the island closes to campers until the next Easter school holidays.
The quick answer
For turtles, go between late October and April: nesting runs from late October to February and hatchlings emerge from about December to late April, so December to February can give you both. For whales, go from July to October; for mantas, May to August. Summer is warmer (about 27°C on the Bundaberg coast) but falls in the November to May stinger season.
When is the best time to visit Lady Musgrave Island?
December to February, if you want turtles on the beach and warm water. July to October if you want humpback whales and do not mind a wetsuit.
Our pick is December or early January. Queensland Parks says turtles nest from late October to February and hatchlings emerge from about December, so those weeks give you a chance of both. The water on the Bundaberg coast averages about 26 to 27°C, the noddies are nesting, and you can still camp until the day after the Australia Day weekend. Wear a full-body suit: it is stinger season.
Winter is the other good answer. The water drops to about 21°C, but humpbacks pass from July to October and mantas peak from May to August. If you mainly want a calm first snorkel with turtles, any month works, because the operators say green turtles live in the lagoon all year.

When do turtles nest and hatch on Lady Musgrave?
Turtles nest from late October to February, and hatchlings emerge from about December to late April, according to Queensland Parks.
Green and loggerhead turtles are the common nesters in the Capricornia Cays. Lady Musgrave Experience gives slightly wider dates, nesting October to March and hatching December to May, and says the best chance of hatchlings is January to March. Day trippers may spot tracks on the guided walk, Lady Musgrave Experience says; campers, on the island overnight, have better odds of the turtles themselves.
On the mainland, Mon Repos near Bundaberg runs turtle encounter tours from early November to late March, at A$31.30 an adult for that season. Tickets go on sale in June. Season dates and the watching rules are in turtle season 2026/27.

The operators say green turtles live in the lagoon all year: snorkel with them, then walk the island with the crew.

From July to October, when humpbacks pass on their migration. Lady Musgrave Experience runs whale-watching trips from Bundaberg in that window.
The day boats are not whale trips, but the 1770 day cruise lists humpback whales among its possible sightings, and Lady Musgrave Experience says its day tours see humpbacks in winter. Boats must stay more than 100 metres from a whale, or 300 metres if three or more boats are already closer.
For a dedicated whale day, Hervey Bay is the classic. The Hervey Bay whale cruise goes out with marine scientists and hydrophones, and the listing guarantees a sighting from 15 July to 9 October. Free cancellation needs 2 days' notice on that one.

Mantas are around all year, with a peak from May to August, according to Lady Musgrave Experience.
Lady Musgrave Experience runs a manta snorkel safari from Bundaberg in that season, and Gladstone Region's tourism board says divers may meet manta rays around the island. The water is cool then, about 21 to 24°C on the Bundaberg coast, so a full wetsuit is worth hiring. The 1770 day cruise also lists manta rays among its possible sightings.
For the gear and the cold, see snorkelling, stingers and sharks.

When is stinger season at Lady Musgrave?
November to May, the official Queensland marine stinger season. Lady Musgrave lies inside the Irukandji range, according to Surf Life Saving.
That overlaps with the best turtle months, so the answer is not to skip summer but to dress for it. A full-body lycra suit or wetsuit is the official advice. Lady Musgrave Experience says it has "never had any harmful stingers", and also that it cannot guarantee there will be none.
A full-length wetsuit comes with the small-group snorkel day from 1770. It does not land on Lady Musgrave Island.

Snorkel with the turtles in any month (the operators say they stay all year), then pick the season: nests and noddies from October to April, mantas from May to August, whales from July to October.
- All year: lagoon snorkelling, the glass-bottom boat, the guided walk through the pisonia, and a picnic on the beach.
- October to April: black noddies nesting in the pisonia, and the most seabirds of the year.
- Late October to April: turtle nesting, then hatchlings from about December.
- May to August: the manta peak.
- July to October: humpbacks offshore.
- Easter to late January: camping, for a night on the island after the day boats leave.
Camping closes from the day after the Australia Day long weekend until the Easter school holidays, and Lady Musgrave Experience adds a 10% surcharge on public holidays. Permits are covered in the camping guide.

Is Lady Musgrave Island worth it in winter?
Yes, if you want whales and mantas and will wear a wetsuit. You lose the nesting turtles and the warm water, not the lagoon turtles.
From June to October the water is about 21 to 23°C on the Bundaberg coast, it is outside the official stinger season, and humpbacks pass from July. The operators say the green turtles stay in the lagoon all year, so the snorkelling still delivers. Seabirds are fewer: they are most plentiful from October to April.
The early starts are colder too. Pack a warm layer for the marina and the boat ride home. Everything else about the day is covered in the day trip guide.
