Booking choice: The Lady Musgrave Island day cruise, from $225 per person. Check dates Tour details
Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave get compared because they are neighbours. Lady Elliot sits at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, and Lady Musgrave is the southernmost island of Capricornia Cays National Park, just to the north. Both are protected coral cays, and both are known for turtles and snorkelling.
The way you reach them is what really separates them. That changes the price, how long you get on the island and where you can sleep. Heron Island, off Gladstone, is the third name people weigh up, so it is in the comparison too.
The quick answer
Pick Lady Musgrave for a sheltered lagoon, a boat day from A$295 (1770 Reef, 2026/27) and camping. Pick Lady Elliot for a fly-in day with about 7 hours ashore and a resort, at A$595 an adult from Bundaberg or Hervey Bay (2026/27). Heron Island is a resort stay, reached by a 2.5-hour boat from Gladstone. Heron's getting-here page lists no day trips, and the ferry leaves Heron at 12:45, soon after it arrives, so it is in practice an overnight stay.
Which is better, Lady Elliot or Lady Musgrave Island?
Lady Musgrave for a lagoon you can sail into and a lower price; Lady Elliot for a shorter trip by air, more time on the island and a resort.
For a first reef day on a budget, Lady Musgrave wins. The lagoon is protected by its reef ring, it suits beginners, and the full day from 1770 costs about half a Lady Elliot day. Lady Elliot wins if you hate boats, want hours on the sand rather than a short landing, or want to stay the night in a bed instead of a tent.

Bundaberg is also where the Lady Musgrave Experience boat leaves for Lady Musgrave, boarding 7:00am at Bundaberg Port Marina. Based in Bundaberg, you can choose between the two islands without moving hotels. The Lady Musgrave day from both ports is covered in the day trip guide.
Which island has better snorkelling?
Lady Musgrave for sheltered, beginner-friendly lagoon snorkelling; Lady Elliot for reef in a highly protected green zone.
Queensland Parks calls Lady Musgrave's lagoon snorkelling "excellent and protected". The reef ring keeps outside currents out, patch reefs and bommies rise from the sand, and Lady Musgrave Experience says green turtles live in the lagoon all year. For a nervous swimmer it is hard to beat. The glass-bottom boat covers anyone who will not swim at all.
Lady Elliot sits in a highly protected green zone, and the resort points out that Lonely Planet named it the number one snorkel destination for 2025. Its day trip includes a guided snorkel or glass-bottom boat tour, with the short wetsuit provided.
Around Lady Musgrave, the outer reefs are another option. The small-group snorkel day from 1770 visits two sites in the Capricorn Bunker Group with a guide, no more than ten snorkellers and a full-length wetsuit. It does not land on Lady Musgrave Island.

Lady Elliot has an eco-certified resort, and its flights are sold for stays as well as day trips. Heron Island is a resort island: stays of four nights or longer get half-price boat transfers. For tent life on Lady Musgrave, read the camping guide.
